Why Potholes Form — and How They Get Repaired
A pothole seems like it appears overnight. It doesn't. By the time you can see one, the failure underneath has usually been developing for a long time — and understanding that sequence explains why some repairs last for years and others fail within months.
The sequence that creates a pothole
Step one: a crack. Pavement develops a crack from aging, UV oxidation, thermal cycling or load. On its own, it's minor.
Step two: water gets in. Rain — especially our fast, heavy monsoon rain — runs down through that crack instead of off the surface.
Step three: the base weakens. Water saturates the aggregate base beneath the asphalt. Wet base material loses the load-bearing strength the pavement depends on.
Step four: traffic flexes the surface. With soft support underneath, vehicles cause the asphalt above to flex in ways it wasn't designed to. Cracks multiply into the interconnected pattern known as alligator cracking.
Step five: the surface breaks up. Pieces work loose, tires pull them out, and now there's a hole.
Step six: it accelerates. The open hole collects even more water and every vehicle that hits it knocks more material loose. This is why a small pothole becomes a large one so quickly.
Why they grow fast here
Two local factors speed this up. First, intense UV and heat oxidize asphalt binder, making the surface brittle and more prone to the initial cracking. Second, monsoon storms deliver a large volume of water in a very short time, which finds every crack at once. Together they compress a process that takes years elsewhere.
Repair methods and what they're for
Throw-and-go / cold patch — cold mix shoveled in and compacted. It's fast and works in any weather, which makes it useful as an emergency stopgap on a hazard. It is temporary; expect it to need replacing.
Surface patch — the damaged surface material is removed and replaced with new hot mix, then compacted. This is a real repair, and it works well when the base underneath is still sound.
Full-depth repair — the pavement is cut out in a clean square, the failed base material is excavated and replaced, recompacted, and new asphalt is laid in lifts. This is the durable answer when the base has failed, which it usually has if the pothole keeps coming back.
Infrared repair — the existing asphalt around the pothole is heated, raked and recompacted with new material, creating a seamless repair without a cut edge. Good for surface-level failures.
Why some patches fail
A patch that fails within months almost always means the base problem was never addressed. If the underlying support is saturated or gone, putting new asphalt on top of it just recreates the same failure. A repeat pothole in the same spot is a base problem, not a patching problem.
How to not have potholes
Everything upstream. Seal cracks before water gets in. Keep drainage working so water leaves the surface. Sealcoat on schedule to slow the oxidation that starts the cracking. Handle small failures while they're small.
Potholes are the most expensive possible outcome of ignoring a crack. Almost every one of them was preventable for a fraction of the repair cost.
